Coatings ServiceZinc plating covers iron and steel with a thin zinc layer to resist rust. At the TŞT plant it is applied electrolytically: an electric current deposits zinc ions from a chemical bath onto the metal. Zinc provides cathodic protection, so if the surface is scratched or struck, corrosion attacks the zinc first and rusting of the steel underneath is delayed. A subsequent passivation step can give a blue (white), yellow (iridescent), black or green/khaki colour, and the surface also serves as a base for powder or wet paint. It is used on bolts, nuts, washers, brake and lock parts, machine frames and furniture hinges.
