Axys and Onyx mastic surface coatings are applied to asphalt when hairline cracks are just starting; they fill cracks, seal aggregate to the surface and provide waterproofing. In suitable weather the second coat is applied within a maximum of 15–30 minutes and the road returns to traffic quickly. Axys requires two separate coats; the first must be completely dry and contain no damp areas before the second starts. The same thickness is maintained along gutter and safety-strip edges. The first coat is 0.5–0.7 kg/m² and the recommended total with the second coat is at least 1 kg/m²; it is adjusted to surface conditions only after project-manager approval.
