What data should I prepare for a filtration system design?

You need the process generating the dust or fume, the type, estimated quantity and particle size of the material released, and the number of pick-up points. Add the plant layout, ceiling height, existing duct routes and electrical infrastructure. Shift patterns and whether the sources run simultaneously or in rotation directly affect the total air volume calculation.

How is the required air volume calculated?

Each source needs a capture velocity at the hood or inlet; that velocity, together with the inlet cross-section and the distance to the source, gives the volume for that point. The points are summed and multiplied by a simultaneity factor to give the system volume. Pressure loss along the ducting is then calculated to fix the fan duty point.

How is the filter class determined?

Filter selection depends on the particle size to be captured and on where the cleaned air is discharged. Applications that return air to the workspace require higher efficiency stages. Very fine particles such as welding fume need an additional stage. Ask for the filter surface area and the air-to-cloth ratio to be stated in the quotation, as that ratio governs filter life and pressure loss.

Can an existing extraction system be improved?

In most cases yes. Complaints about weak extraction often trace back to lines added later, clogged filters, incorrect hood geometry or a fan pushed beyond its capacity. Measuring flow and pressure on the existing system identifies where the bottleneck sits. That measurement is the first step to take before committing to a new system.
