Service description

Plasma nitriding is a surface hardening method performed in specially designed vacuum furnaces, where process gases are ionised by electric current and directed onto the workpieces. Process temperature ranges from 350 to 580 °C depending on material and required surface properties, and duration from 15 minutes to 120 hours. The service runs on 4 pulsed plasma nitriding/nitrocarburizing furnaces: max. work size Ø1400 x 1800 mm, max. weight 2200 kg, max. temperature 580 °C. Gears, cams, shafts, plastic and hot forging dies and hydraulic cylinders are typical applications.

Plasma Nitriding of Stainless Steels

Nitriding Service

Using i-nit pulsed plasma nitriding furnaces and the i-nit Process control system, the wear resistance of stainless steels such as AISI 304, AISI 316L and AISI 420 and duplex grades such as 1.4462 is increased without reducing corrosion resistance. The low-temperature process allows the gas composition to determine the nitride or S-phase (expanded austenite) layer formed on the surface. Optimum process conditions are defined together with the customer based on where the part is used and the properties expected.

Nitriding Service

ARCOR is a liquid nitrocarburizing process. Nitrogen and carbon are diffused into steel and iron-based alloys in special salt baths at about 500–600°C. The result is a hard, black, porous protective layer on the outer surface. Salt-spray resistance of several hundred hours is the stated target; surface hardness, wear and fatigue strength increase, and seizure in sliding contact is reduced. Because it runs cooler than many other heat treatments, the risk of size change and distortion is lower. It is used on gas-spring rods, hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder rods, engine parts, gears, bushings and connecting pins.

Nitriding Service

Gas nitriding is a surface-hardening process in which nitrogen atoms are diffused into steel and cast-iron parts. TŞT runs it in controlled-atmosphere gas-nitriding furnaces, hardening only the outer layer while leaving the core unchanged and keeping dimensional stability as wear resistance increases. Because the process is carried out below the steel’s structural transformation temperature, bending, warping or loss of size is not expected and no extra grinding is required afterwards. The surface layer adds fatigue and corrosion strength. It is applied to engine components, camshafts and crankshafts, piston pins, gearbox gears, and lift-shock-absorber and hydraulic-cylinder rods.
