Low volumes such as 1–100 pieces can be made in hours or days depending on geometry. FDM builds filament layer by layer; SLA cures photopolymer with a UV laser; MJF fuses PA12 powder with HP Multi Jet; SLS sinters powder polyamide with a laser; DMLS sinters metal powders. After data is received the technology is chosen by need and expected performance.

Virtual prototyping includes plastic-flow, static/dynamic and mouldability analyses; physical prototyping uses 3D printing, silicone moulds, machining and trial moulds.
