It retains fragments if broken, blocks 97–99% of UV, and contributes to sound insulation. It can also be used in insulating-glass units. Compared with ordinary double glazing it reduces heat loss by 50% and fuel costs, while making the most of solar heat without sacrificing light transmittance. It helps keep the area in front of the window from feeling cold in winter and delays condensation. Payback versus ordinary IGU is stated as 1–2 years from winter fuel savings.
