Concentrated zinc oxide
At the Karabük OSB plant, EAF flue dust from the partner steel companies is treated with the Waelz process: high-temperature treatment and a series of steps render the dust harmless and separate concentrated zinc oxide. The facility can obtain around 50,000 tons of zinc oxide from nearly 200,000 tons of flue dust per year. All of its high-quality product is exported to foreign markets; production has continued since January 2013.
Waelz zinc oxide concentrate
Waelz zinc oxide concentrate, currently exported from Türkiye because it is not converted to metallic form domestically, is the main metal-recovery output of Marzinc’s existing plant. The facility was built to recover EAF dust in an environmentally friendly and economical way and has around 50,000 tons of zinc oxide capacity. The concentrate is shipped to foreign markets as feedstock for metallic zinc production.
Waelz slag
Considering the iron content of the slag from the existing facility, it can be used as an alternative raw material to iron ore in cement factories. R&D continues on more efficient use of the slag as an alternative raw material, taking cement companies’ needs into account. The slag is the process output after EAF flue dust is treated at high temperature in the Waelz process.
Services
Safe flue dust transport
Harmful flue dust generated during iron and steel production is filtered so it is not released into the environment. Safely transporting the filtered dust to the recovery plant is one step in the process. The factory is at Kale Köyü Organize Sanayi Bölgesi Mah. Safran Sokak No:4, Merkez, 78100 Karabük; a warehouse is at Yağcılar Mahallesi No:125, Terkehatipler, Bartın.
EAF flue dust recovery
Flue dust collected by industrial facilities through filtration is subjected to high-temperature treatment and a series of processes, rendering it harmless to the environment and recovering the zinc oxide it contains. The Waelz Process, the only globally proven method for flue dust recovery, is used. The plant’s main purpose is to recover EAF dust from the partner companies’ production in an environmentally friendly and economical way.
ISO 17025 laboratory analysis
Ensuring and maintaining customer satisfaction is among the laboratory’s primary aims. Work is carried out under TS EN ISO/IEC 17025; the accreditation covers total carbon and sulphur determination and elemental analyses on flue dust, slag and zinc ore concentrates. The laboratory is at Karabük OSB; customer-satisfaction surveys and complaints are handled via [email protected].
