Falling head or flow, rising current draw, leakage at the seal, unusual noise and vibration, and increasing temperature at the bearing housing are the main warning signs. A gravel-like sound indicating cavitation requires immediate attention; continuing to run in that condition causes permanent damage to the impeller.

Seal replacement, coupling alignment and smaller interventions can usually be done on site. Impeller replacement, shaft straightening, balancing and casing machining require machine tools and move to a workshop. On critical duties, keeping a spare unit shortens downtime by letting production continue while the workshop repair proceeds.

The interval depends on daily running hours, whether the fluid is abrasive or corrosive, temperature, and how critical the pump is to production. For pumps that run continuously and whose failure halts production, condition monitoring based on vibration and temperature data is preferred over calendar-based servicing. Keeping maintenance records lets the interval be tuned to real data over time.

When requesting parts, share the pump make, model and serial number along with the flow and head figures on the nameplate, since part dimensions can differ between production years of the same model. Check lead times for wear parts such as seals and bearings in advance, and hold them in stock for critical pumps.
