Bonded Seals
A bonded seal (Usit ring, Multi Seal, Dowty, Dyna, Mega ring or washer) is a static seal for a bolt or hydraulic coupling, used to prevent leakage and pressure loss. It has a hard outer ring and an elastomeric inner ring bonded in place with heat and pressure. Self-centring designs add a parallel flap on the inner diameter so the seal stays on the bolt. Materials listed include NBR, EPDM, VMQ, HNBR and FKM/FPM/Viton, with KTW, WRC, NSF, WRAS, ACS, FDA and R67 01 LPG approvals and metric/inch/BSP sizes.
Dichtomatik Oil Seals
Techseals states it supplies every brand of oil seal in inch or metric, high or low pressure, and will locate stock or propose a 100% alternative if not on hand. Rotary Seals
A rotary shaft seal (also called a lip seal) prevents leakage of oil or grease from rotating parts; it is typically rubber, metal or other materials fitted tightly around a shaft. EPDM ( Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer ) O-rings
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) o-rings are used in static or dynamic sealing for chemical and heat resistance; they resist acids, alkalis and alcohols and are listed from -40°C to 150°C. EPDM is a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and diene; ethylene content can vary from 45% to 80% and diene from about 1 to 10/12%, which affects vulcanization. The page also notes electrical insulating properties and low compression set. Hydraulic and Pneumatic Sealing Elements
Hydraulic seals are used in systems that generate power with liquid or oil; they are designed for high pressures and temperatures and are commonly made of rubber, polyurethane or plastic. Pneumatic seals are used with compressed air or gas at lower pressures and temperatures, commonly rubber, silicone or PTFE. Sealing elements include gaskets, o-rings and seals in various shapes and materials. Gaskets provide a static seal; o-rings seal between moving parts in hydraulic and pneumatic systems as well as motors and pumps.
Kant Seals
A kant seal is an elastomer ring with a square section for static applications, usually under SAE flanges and covers. High sealing capacity and dimensional stability are stated; NBR and FPM for the same groove dimensions as o-rings, with EPDM, silicone and HNBR also possible. It is used as an axial static alternative to an o-ring mainly to prevent extrusion; the square shape resists extrusion longer at higher axial pressures. Advantages listed: no backup ring needed, no tendency to roll in the groove, retains shape under axial pressure, long lifespan.
Rubber Gaskets
Gaskets fill a space or prevent liquids or gases from leaking; they are made from a material that deforms more easily than the parts being sealed and seal when clamped. Materials offered at Techseals include rubber (NBR, Viton, EPDM, SBR), rubber cork, felt, oil paper, asbestos-free fibreboard/sheet gasket, PTFE/Teflon, hard fibre (celleron) and hard paper (pertinax), and graphite. Cord Ring
If the correct o-ring size is not in stock, an o-ring can be made from round cord: cut to length and glue the ends with instant adhesive (Loctite 406 is named as suitable). Alternatively, o-rings from cord can be vulcanized at both ends in production. Round cord is supplied on a roll or cut to the required length. The cord-ring page describes making rings from cord, distinct from selling cord stock alone.
Mechanical Seals
A mechanical seal prevents leakage of water, oil or chemicals between rotating or stationary parts in pumps, compressors, mixers and similar equipment. It generally has a stationary part on the housing, a rotating part on the shaft, and a flexible sealing element between them. Cartridge mechanical seals house the components in a self-contained unit to simplify installation. Pusher seals use a spring to keep faces in contact; non-pusher seals use the pressure of the sealed fluid. Techseals states it supplies all kinds of mechanical seals.
NBR Rubber O-ring
Techseals Rubber is a manufacturer and source for NBR O-rings of all sizes. Nitrile butadiene rubber, especially NBR (Buna-N), is a synthetic elastomer used for o-rings and other seals; it combines butadiene and acrylonitrile monomers and is resistant to water and chemicals, with high tensile strength, low compression set and abrasion resistance. NBR o-rings are used in automotive, aerospace and industrial machinery; acrylonitrile content ranges from 18% to 50%. ACM O-Ring
ACM (acrylic rubber) o-rings provide resistance to mineral oils at high temperatures and are widely used in the automotive industry. ACM rubber is described as maintaining its properties in hot oil up to 150°C. Water compatibility and low-temperature flexibility are significantly worse than NBR. Techseals lists 70, 75, 80 and 90 Shore hardness and standard colour black on the ACM product page.
AU PUR Polyurethane O-Ring
AU/polyurethane o-rings are listed for high tear and abrasion resistance, superior gas tightness, excellent rebound resilience, and resistance to fuels and technical oils. The page also notes performance over a wide temperature range, flexibility at low temperatures, and resistance to ozone and oxygen. CR Neoprene O-Ring
CR neoprene o-rings are homopolymers of chloroprene (chlorobutadiene) and are among the earliest synthetic rubbers used for seals. They are not suitable for aromatic and oxygenated solvents. Various formulations are given for operating temperatures from -40°C to +110°C. Hardness 40–90 Shore; standard colour black, with other colours on request on the product page.
FEP-Encapsulated O-Ring
FEP encapsulated o-rings are compared with PTFE on the product page: the main differences are maximum use temperature and colour (PTFE milky white, FEP transparent). FEP is described as a slightly more cost-effective polymer than PFA, with similar chemical resistance, non-stick and dielectric properties to PTFE and PFA. FEP is unaffected by UV radiation and has UV transmittance over 97%, making FEP o-rings suitable for UV applications.
FEPM AFLAS O-Ring
FEPM/FFPM/AFLAS perfluoroelastomers have chemical and thermal resistance similar to PTFE, combined with the elasticity of an FKM o-ring (tetrafluoroethylene propylene rubber). Because of the higher price level they are used only when other materials no longer meet the requirements and safety justifies the cost. Main applications listed are oilfield and chemical service. FFKM O-Ring
FFKM/FFPM o-rings are materials for the highest chemical and thermal attack; some types withstand +340°C. Chemical resistance is described as nearly universal and comparable to PTFE o-rings. They are made from perfluoroelastomers used where acids, bases, solvents and reactive chemicals are present, including chemical processing, semiconductor and oil-and-gas applications. Compression-set resistance is highlighted for static sealing with long service life.
HNBR O-Ring
HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber) is produced by complete or partial hydrogenation of double bonds in NBR. Compared with NBR o-rings, HNBR has better oil resistance, heat resistance and strength, and is more resistant to ozone and aggressive substances. Operating range is given as -40°C to +165°C, with peaks up to +190°C. Hardness 40–90 Shore; standard colours black and green; Bursa production to ISO 3601/1 and European stock access are listed.
O-Ring Cord
A rubber o-ring cord is a flexible sealing component cut to fit different sizes and shapes. Standard elastomers listed are NBR, EPDM, FKM/FPM/Viton, VMQ silicone and CR, with example hardness/colour/cure and temperature: NBR 70 black sulphur -30 to +100°C, FKM 75 black bisphenol -15 to +200°C, EPDM 70 black peroxide -45 to +150°C, VMQ 60 red peroxide -55 to +200°C. PTFE Teflon O-Ring
PTFE Teflon o-rings are described as a polymer formed by replacing hydrogen atoms of the ethylene molecule with fluorine. The product page calls it one of the largest known molecules and links that structure to durability. Although technically a thermoplastic, its behaviour against heat is distinguished from ordinary plastics. VMQ Silicone O-Ring
The VMQ (vinyl methyl silicone) o-ring is a silicone-rubber seal used to prevent leakage of liquids or gases between mating surfaces. Silicone VMQ/MVQ o-rings are described for resistance to high and low temperatures, ozone, weathering and chemicals, from -55°C to 200°C. Typical uses listed include automotive engines, aerospace and industrial equipment. Hardness 40–80 Shore is supplied; as a group silicones have low tensile, tear and abrasion strength, with special formulations for temperature and pressure changes.
Custom Moulded Rubber Products
Custom molded rubber products are components designed and manufactured for a particular application; raw rubber is heated, melted and shaped in a mold. Molding allows control over shape, size and material properties for o-rings, gaskets, seals, bumpers, diaphragms and other parts. Raw materials listed include natural rubber, synthetic rubber, silicone, neoprene and EPDM. The stated process is to send a drawing or the original part and specify the compound, or have the compound identified from the original part.
Radial Seals
Radial seals are dynamic seals used to prevent fluid escape where there is relative motion between two parts, such as rotating shafts. They accommodate oils, greases and hydraulic fluids. V-Rings
V-rings are rotary seals used to seal rotating shafts against dirt, dust, water and leaking grease. Viton, FPM, FKM O-rings
FPM/FKM Viton o-rings are used in aerospace, automotive and mechanical applications that need maximum resistance to high temperatures and chemicals. FKM/FPM/Viton has a temperature range of -26°C to +205°/230°C (higher for short periods) and is described for chemical compatibility, low compression set and aging resistance. It resists mineral oils and greases, aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, diesel, gasoline and silicone oils. X-Rings / Quad-Rings
A rubber X-ring, also called a Quad-Ring, has four sealing surfaces instead of the two on a standard o-ring. It is made from elastomers including nitrile, fluoroelastomer and silicone; sealing force is distributed across four surfaces, reducing friction and wear. The X shape keeps the cord from rolling in the groove and is described as ideal for dynamic applications, with lubricant accumulating between the lips. Listed advantages include no flash line on the sealing surfaces and avoidance of the twist damage that can occur when an o-ring slides in a groove.
