What information does a design study require?
You need the fluid type and temperature, the required flow range, the elevation difference between source and destination, and the estimated length and routing of the pipework. In an existing plant, nameplate data from the current pumps and any energy consumption records will speed the study up considerably.
What is a system curve and why is it produced?
The system curve shows the total head the installation demands to carry a given flow: static head plus friction losses that rise with flow. Where it intersects the pump curve is the point at which the pump will actually run. A selection made without this curve may look correct against catalogue figures yet operate somewhere else entirely in the field.
How are variable-flow systems approached?
Where demand changes through the day, adjusting speed with a variable frequency drive instead of throttling a valve reduces energy consumption markedly. Across wide flow ranges, several smaller pumps staged in sequence are preferred over one large pump. Which approach fits is decided by mapping the flow profile across the day and the seasons.
Can an existing pump station be revised?
Yes. A revision study usually begins by measuring the current situation: actual flow, pressure and absorbed power are recorded and compared against the pumps’ nameplate data. Depending on what emerges, trimming the impeller or changing the control strategy is sometimes enough — a new pump investment is not always necessary.
