What information should I provide when requesting a centrifugal pump quotation?
At minimum share the flow rate (m³/h), head, fluid type and temperature, density and viscosity, plus supply voltage and frequency. The suction line geometry and liquid level are also needed for the NPSH calculation. Daily running hours and how often the duty point shifts determine the efficiency target and motor selection.
Why does the NPSH value matter so much?
NPSH is the net positive suction head at the pump inlet. If the value your system provides drops below the value the pump requires, the liquid vaporises on the suction side and cavitation begins. Cavitation erodes the impeller, causes vibration and noise, and eventually damages bearings and seals. Calculate the suction line before selecting the pump.
Which standards should I ask for in manufacturing and testing?
For process pumps, ISO 2858 dimensional interchangeability and ISO 5199 design requirements are common references, with ISO 9906 used for performance acceptance tests. API 610 is requested in oil, gas and petrochemical service. State in writing at quotation stage which standard applies and whether a test report is included in the delivery.
What should I watch to reduce energy consumption?
Over a pump’s life, energy cost can far exceed the purchase price. The three most effective steps are selecting a pump that runs close to its best efficiency point, avoiding oversizing, and using a variable frequency drive instead of throttling valves where demand varies. Ask for the efficiency at your duty point to be stated in the quotation.
