A water-diluted, medium-setting asphalt emulsion penetrates surface voids; emulsions that are not diluted enough may leave excess bitumen and a slippery surface. Shortly after application (about one hour) the treated asphalt can be opened to traffic. On newly built asphalt pavements application can be made within 1–2 months of paving. The recommended programme is to protect a single-layer chip seal within 1–2 months, and double-layer chip seal and hot-mix asphalt in the following asphalt season. Successful applications have been carried out on the Ankara–Nallıhan–Sarıcakaya road.
